Oxford Nanopore technology arrives at the University of León with Scayle in its new intensive course

When, where and for whom is this course?

The course will be held from 3 to 5 February (from 9:00 to 14:00 and from 15:30 to 18:30), and will take place at the CRAI - TIC Building, Vegazana Campus, University of León.

The course, with limited places and a registration fee of 400€, is aimed at researchers interested in genomic studies, professionals in Computer Science, Biology or Biotechnology involved in genetic diagnostics, and postgraduate university students from technical degrees in the experimental or economic fields. It is also open to anyone interested in research, innovation and the development of these areas.

If you are interested, here are some recommendations on how to participate:

  1. It is recommended to have a minimum of laboratory experience;
  2. Students are requested to bring a DNA sample (in case they do not have it, they should communicate it in advance so that SCAYLE can provide it to them);
  3. It is suggested that students bring a lab coat.

What will you learn in this course?

This course is designed to provide you with the tools and training needed for the sequencing and analysis of data from nanopore sequencing techniques using the Oxford Nanopore technology, with a particular focus on its application to the metagenomic study of samples from diverse environments. Among the main contents, you will learn:

  • DNA extraction from a sample and how to perform sequencing on an ONT machine.
  • Apply supercomputing techniques for the collection and assembly of sequenced DNA fragments.
  • Perform the analysis of the provided sample, including the determination of the taxa and genes present, and their abundance.
  • Statistical techniques best suited for the comparison of the data resulting from the analysis.

As part of this course, you will also receive 1.8 ECTS credits from the University of León.

Why should you

  • Hands-on experience: Scayle gives you the opportunity to learn from experts in the field and participate in practical workshops that will allow you to apply what you learn immediately.
  • Upon completion of the course, registrants will have free access to HPC resources for the month following the end of the course.
  • Cutting-edge technology: You will use supercomputing tools to tackle some of the most complex problems in metagenomics research.
  • Limited places: The exclusivity of the course to 10 people guarantees a more personalised and focused learning. Once the registration has been made, the student has 7 days to pay the course fee and formalise the enrolment, otherwise the reservation will be cancelled. Places will be allocated in strict order of registration.
  • Certificate of Achievement: Obtain a certificate of achievement for this course with a minimum attendance of 80%.
