How the Cloud can support the main sector in the region

Wed, 23 Mar 2022

Cloud services have been growing inexorably since the arrival of the Internet in our lives. Given today’s competitive market, only the businesses that are willing to adapt to this technological change will be able to remain at the top of their game. The future of cloud farming is becoming more certain as the versatility and functionality of cloud solutions increase. Moreover, the pandemic caused by COVID 19 has accelerated the implementation of this and other disruptive technologies.

Specifically, the term cloud and cloud computing are concepts used to describe the ability to store and access information on the Internet, generally through third-party services. These services are usually provided by platforms such as Google, billing applications, CRM, etc.

In Castilla y León, the primary sector, agriculture and livestock, account for 9.2% of the region's economy. This is the fourth autonomous community in which the rural areas play a major role in the Spanish economy. Although agriculture is Castilla y León’s most resilient sector due to its extensive areas of arable land, depopulation is heavily affecting it, as fewer people want to work in agriculture.

Fortunately, the implementation of disruptive technologies such as the cloud, can facilitate the performance of tasks in the primary sector. According to this article, with the implementation of this digital tool, the farmer will be able to benefit from the collection of data for better decision-making, which would lead to performing tasks more efficiently, in less time.

Therefore, with cloud technology, farmers can base their decisions on the collected data, which will help them achieve the most beneficial outcome for their businesses. Moreover, with the combination of other disruptive technologies such as 5G or blockchain, they can double their efficiency by, for example, activating a smart irrigation system and providing water to their crops when the collected data indicate it is necessary. This would increase efficiency, save water and reduce costs while minimizing the risk of loss.
