What is Edge Computing and how can it help you?

Edge Computing is the processing, analysis and storage of data that takes place on the network, as close to the source of generation as possible, allowing rapid data analysis and an almost immediate response.

The aim of this technology is to reduce the communication time between the client and the server, improving the speed of response by delegating the heaviest tasks to a central server with high processing capacity.

Despite its similar name, edge computing differs from cloud computing. While cloud computing generates and collects databases in multiple locations, storing them in the cloud for remote processing, edge computing allows information to be kept as close as possible to the user's device.

Benefits for your business

Incorporating edge computing technology into the enterprise raises benefits or plus points:

  • Increased security: data remains within the business network due to local processing, thus avoiding the risks associated with cloud storage, such as cyber-attacks or malware.
  • It is a more cost-effective option, as costs related to bandwidth and data transmission are reduced.
  • Facilitates scalability of computing resources at the edge, allowing configuration to be adjusted according to data volume and operational needs.
  • The proximity of data to its source of generation dramatically improves processing speed, enabling much faster and near-instant decision making.

Examples of benefits for SMEs of using Edge Computing

  • In agriculture, edge computing enables immediate monitoring of conditions such as temperature and humidity, optimising activities and decisions.
  • For livestock farmers, it facilitates rapid data processing to ensure animal health, automate feeding and monitor vital signs.
  • For businesses, it improves workplace safety through video surveillance and condition monitoring, as well as employee timekeeping.

The Institute for Business Competitiveness of Castilla y León (ICECYL) in the framework of DIGIS3 has carried out a training cycle on Digital Transformation and Digitalisation. The course for SME employees will start on 15 April.  It is a free 35h course with face-to-face and online sessions, which will discuss the keys to digital transformation, its impact on business and the different technologies, including Edge Computing. You can register and get more information here.

Get in touch with us! At DIGIS3 we provide technical advice on how to access funding opportunities for new R&D&I projects in the digital area. Check our specific services here.
