The University of León and the Torío River Basin Council Present Project to Digitalise Historic Irrigation Systems of the River as Part of DIGIS3

News - DIGIS3

The University of León (ULE) and the Torío River Basin Council Association hosted an event on 23rd May titled “Digitalisation of the Historic Irrigation Systems of the Torío River Basin”, led by ULE researchers as part of the European DIGIS3 project.

The Torío River Basin Council Association applied to DIGIS3 for mentoring and the development of a proof of concept aimed at digitalising and improving the management of traditional irrigation systems. The initiative makes use of new technologies in the fields of sensor networks and remote flow measurement.

As part of the project, a detailed report has been produced outlining the full digitalisation of traditional historic irrigation communities. A proof of concept will later be carried out in the field to demonstrate the project's viability. Once on-site results are obtained using big data and remote measurement technologies, accurate information will be provided to farmers, livestock breeders, and irrigation communities to help them optimise the use of available water within the basin.

Friday’s presentation was attended by local mayors, irrigation communities, and cultural and environmental associations from areas along the course of the Torío River
